While most of the Premier League concentrate on the closure of the transfer window, it looks as though one of Arsenal's existing players has something more serious on his mind. It has come to light that defender Andre Santos has been arrested by police on suspicion of dangerous driving, with the player later bailed.
It is understood that the incident occurred just one day before Arsenal's opening clash against Sunderland, with police supposedly stopping the defender after becoming suspicious of his erratic driving. A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said, "Shortly after 9.30am on Friday August 17, a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police on the A1, near to Junction 22 of the M25. Officers' attention was drawn to the vehicle due to the manner of its driving. The man has been bailed to return at a date in mid-September to a North London police station."
While Santos did not feature for the Gunners in their game, the fact he was named in the squad will be of slight concern for Arsene Wenger. The Brazilian has most certainly experienced a troubled time since his move from Fenerbahce last summer, with the player simply unable to keep his place in the Gunners' starting line-up due to injury and form issues. At the time, it was rumoured that Arsenal had paid out around €7 million for his services although with Santos now 29-years-old, it remains to see if he can break into the first team and carve out a career at the Emirates Stadium.
While the player has been released on bail, some newspapers have claimed that he could even be facing jail time should he be found guilty of the offence. The Sun have reported that he was "weaving in and out of rush-hour traffic" at speeds up to 130mph and such driving would surely not be taken lightly be the courts.
