Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy earned rave reviews for his performance against Real Madrid in their semi-final tie especially in the second leg as he helped the Blues reach the final of the competition at the expense of their more illustrious opponents.
Real Madrid have won the European Cup/Champions League on 13 occasions, while Chelsea have just one win and that came in the 2011/12 campaign.
Chelsea legend Petr Cech played a big role in the signing of Mendy from one of his former clubs Rennes in the French Ligue 1 last summer. The Blues paid £24m for his transfer and the Senegalese international has been able to repay some of the money spent on his signing with the series of impressive performances from him in the colours of his new team.
Petr Cech recently spoke to BT Sports about Mendy and the secret behind his success at the club. According to Chelsea's performance and technical director Petr Cech, the goalkeeping unit has been important to the performances of Mendy at the club. He said other goalkeepers like KepaArrizabalaga and Willy Cabalero have been able to push Mendy to churn out good performances for the Blues.
Cech also talked about the important role that the defence in front of Mendy has been playing. The former Czech Republic national team goalkeeper then drew similarities between his team that won the Champions League title with Chelsea in 2012 and the current crop of players. The Chelsea director would be hoping that the current set of players can beat Premier League rivals and fellow finalists Manchester City at the EstadioDragao in Portugal to win a second Champions League title later this month
