Chelsea has defeated Southampton in a FA Cup match played at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday. Chelsea won the match by a big margin of 5-1. This was a clinical effort by the Blues. They just outclassed the Southampton team. The margin of the victory itself suggests how dominating the Blues were in the match.
The match was played on the home ground of Southampton, but, the Southampton team wasn’t able to entertain the huge home crowd that had turned up. The Southampton players kept struggling in the entire match. The Blues were aggressive right from the outset and they hardly put a foot wrong. They cashed on most of the opportunities that came their way and walked away with a convincing victory.
The first goal of the match was scored by the Southampton team in the 22nd minute. Jason Puncheon passed the ball to Jay Rodriguez who calmly tapped the ball past the Chelsea goalkeeper to take Southampton ahead in the match. But, that was the first and last goal to be scored by the Southampton team in the match. After that, it was all about Blues.
Demba Ba scored the equalizer in the 35th minute and just before the half time break, Victor Moses took Chelsea ahead by capitalizing on a fine pass from Cole.
Chelsea came into the second half with all guns blazing. Branislav Ivanovic headed Mata’s cross into the far corner of the net to make the score 3-1 and then, Demba Ba scored his second goal in the match in the 61st minute to put Southampton under huge pressure. Frank Lampard put the final nail in the coffin by converting a penalty in the 83rd minute.
Chelsea’s next match will be a Capital One Cup encounter against Swansea City at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.
