Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker believes that the club should take advantage of Petr Cech’s brilliance by reclaiming the league title after a long time. Arsenal have not won the Premier League since the 2003-04 season.
They managed to achieve this title victory by staying unbeaten throughout the season. It is a feat that has never been managed since then. Despite this achievement, Arsenal have been mocked in recent years for their failure to achieve anything close to a title challenge. However, they appear to be in pole position to end this trophy drought.
The club have moved to the top of the table despite their lack of victories in the last five matches. This is due to a combination of good defending and rivals dropping points. Arsenal’s defensive record in recent seasons has been extremely poor. One of the primary reasons for Arsenal having the second best defensive record in the league this season is down to goalkeeper Petr Cech. The former Chelsea goalkeeper came to the Emirates stadium in the summer for around £ 10 million. Mertesacker believes that the immense experience of the Czech Republic shot stopper has been invaluable to the club. Cech is a winner in his career after having lifted numerous league and FA Cup medals.
"Huge experience. He has won a lot of titles, including the Premier League. He knows ... how to stay consistent and, to get information, advice and opinions from him makes us stronger. I realise that this is very important for a squad that is on the one hand young and talented and on the other hand has experienced players who still want to learn a lot about the game.Petr is vocal. He wants to speak, he wants to share that information and what a win-win situation,” said Cech.
